Who: Doctor Chess

What: Doctor Chess is the most celebrated chess teacher on California’s central coast. He has been featured on the local news stations, radio, and in seven different newspapers.  He teaches nine classes in five days with approximately 220 students. He rotates in, an archaeology class and teaches an ongoing debate class. “Debate is a chess game, wherein you move words rather than pieces. Both require strategy and tactics”.

Where: San Luis Obispo County, although he has taught classes from Paso Robles to Los Olivos. With the internet,  he is able to teach anywhere in the world.

When: Mainly after school

Why: Although his students do win tournaments, Doctor Chess’ mission is to produce good reasoning students, not chess champions. “Chess is a means, not an end.”

“So, after a long, boring day at school, kids come running into Doctor Chess’ class. He sits with his feet up on his table, spinning a football on his finger. He is wearing an NFL baseball cap, whistle, and sunglasses (indoors!). He tosses paper footballs for rewards that he pulls out of his black, multi-pocketed, adventure vest. An action packed soundtrack is playing while we battle it out on our boards. Edutainment is here and Doctor Chess is the ultimate delivery system for logic, strategy, and fun!”- A. Student
